“I recently had a postnatal massage here and it was exactly what I needed. Lindsay took the time to find out how I was feeling to customise my massage for me and make sure I was comfortable on the table and didn’t aggravate my Caesarean scar. The massage really helped me work out some knots from late nights breastfeeding and to do something kind to check in with myself for an hour. Lindsay also very kindly recommended some other things I can do to help my recovery, making it feel like more than just a regular massage appointment you could get somewhere else. I didn’t feel rushed in or out of the door, so a very relaxing experience, which was exactly what I needed. I’m looking forward to getting another treatment soon!”

Benefits of postnatal massage.

  • It promotes the healing of internal wound

The process of childbirth can have a huge toll on a woman’s body. The process has an impact on their body both externally and internally.Massage is a good way to help in the recovery process especially from muscle tension and sore spots. Massage has also been used to help mums who’ve gone through caesarian section to recover from the effects of this procedure.

  • It promotes relaxation

Not only does the new mum need relaxation of the mind but also the entire body. Massage is used to stimulate the release of natural “feel good hormones” and painkillers in the body known as endorphins.

Endorphins help in lowering stress hormones which are released during and after birth while at the same time-fighting depression and anxiety more effectively. Records show that many new mothers suffer from post birth depression which could range from temporary to serious levels.

  • Improves breastfeeding

lactation hormones are some of the hormones released during massage. As the new mother undergoes postnatal massage, oxytocin is released and this in return helps regulate the level of prolactin in the body.

As the therapist concentrates in the chest muscles with a gentle massage, hardened area and clumps are loosened, blocked ducts opened, and milk production and circulation increased. Massage will also help ease breast pain.

  • Enhances sleep

Taking care of a newborn can take a toll on the new mother. This results in fatigue which easily affects her sleeping pattern, especially when adjusting to the new life. Massage can help improve the mother’s sleeping pattern as it eases fatigue and relax the mind more.

  • Enhances body fluid circulation

It is important to have body fluid balance following a pregnancy. Studies show that after birth, the fluid volume increases by around 50%.Through massage, there is an increased circulation and drainage of lymphatic thus aiding in the elimination of body waste and excess fluids. As the tissues are stimulated, water in the body is shifted to the right places.

  • Relieves pain

It’s normal for new moms to experience residual body aches. This is intensified especially on the arms, back and shoulders due to childcare and breastfeeding but with the holistic approach of massage, the muscles are relaxed and pain relieved.

What to expect.

At the beginning of the first session a full confidential consultation will be taken. This is done to get a better understanding of you and any ailments, areas of tension or discomfort that you may be experiencing.

We will discuss your pregnancy and birth experience.

No two massages are the same and each massage is completely tailored to your needs on the given day. Our massage treatments incorporate many different techniques to help you relax.

The treatment would usually take place on a massage couch, using a range of different supports to suit your needs.

We generally use coconut oil in the treatments, but we are happy to accommodate any requests, if given in advance.

Underwear is worn by you, for the treatment. Your therapist will leave the room whilst you undress and position yourself under the drape. During the treatment they will only uncover the area of the body that they are working on at the time, the rest of your body will be covered.

Your therapist will check in with you, with regards to pressure and comfort, and very much encourage you to communicate your preferences, many clients though, prefer to remain silent throughout, so it really is up to you.

Once your treatment is complete your therapist will leave the room for a few minutes, so that you can slowly and gradually re dress. They will then come back into the room and spend a little more time discussing your treatment. If it is appropriate you may receive some gentle aftercare suggestions. This could be something like some simple stretching or relaxing breathing exercises. This will complete your Postnatal Massage treatment.
